CRUTEM5 data is provided here in NetCDF4 format. The current version of the CRUTEM5 dataset is CRUTEM.5.0.1.0.

Version information

CRUTEM.5.0.1.0 updates the data from CRUTEM.5.0.0.0 to include the most recent monthly data as new obervational data becomes available. Data for other versions of CRUTEM5 are available via the CRUTEM5 versions page.

Gridded data

The CRUTEM5 gridded data files contain air temperature anomaly information over land, mapped onto a regular 5-degree latitude by 5-degree longitude grid, together with associated uncertainty information.

Time series

Regional average time series are provided for selected regions. Time series are presented as temperature anomalies (deg C) relative to 1961-1990. Two varieties of time series files are provided. The summary series files provide best estimate series with upper and lower bounds on uncertainty. The component series files contain addition information on the contribution of each uncertainty source.

Station data

CRUTEM5 station files are provided in NetCDF4 format.

The station files are named according to each station's assigned station number. Each file contains information for a single station. Station files are named as [RRNNNC].nc, where RRNNNC is a 6-digit station ID number that is assigned by CRU. There are two forms of CRUTEM station numbers, indicated by the value of the final digit (C).

Where a station has (or had) a valid World Meteorological Organization (WMO) station index the final digit (C) takes a value of zero and is preceded by the WMO station index formatted as RRNNN, where RR is the WMO block number and NNN the station number.
Where no WMO station index is available, the final digit (C) takes a non-zero value, indicating that the preceding 5 digits have been assigned in production of CRUTEM are not a valid WMO station index.

The first two digits of the ID number (RR) indicate the WMO block number for the station’s location (except for 99, which includes stations from a variety of countries), according to the codes used by the WMO (e.g. 01 is Norway, 16 is Italy, Greece and Malta). See this list of WMO ID ranges for each country to identify the first two digits used for each country.

Examples of CRUTEM station numbers:

010010 - Jan Mayen, Norway. 01 is the code for Norway, and 001 the number designated by the Norwegian NMS. The sixth character here is a zero, indicating that this station has a valid WMO station index.
161331 - Mantova , Italy. 16 is the code for Italy, Greece and Malta, and 133 the number originally designated by the Italians. The sixth character is not a zero and this means the series is not known to have an official WMO station index.
